Free & Fit - Getting the Right Help

The Importance of Personalized Self-Care
Whilst writing last week's article on mental health, I realized this was a deeper issue – a more personalized process than I had imagined. This realization reminded me of how crucial it is to seek the right help.
When I first considered therapy, I was reluctant, unwilling, and angry. Today, I respond to every situation with the understanding that I need coaching through challenging times. To that end, I seek support from my mentor and regularly discuss my journey with my therapist.
My first counselor was Mr. Hugh O'Connor from Hammersmith in the United Kingdom, conveniently near my beloved Queens Park Rangers. This summer, I returned home to visit with Hugh and, after finishing our conversation, I asked Hugh if he would mind walking back to his office with me – the same office where we had held our sessions together. Please note that Hugh has been my therapist, mentor, and now friend. We try to meet every summer when I come home and catch up. This was no different.
What happened next was unexpected. When I asked Hugh how long it had been since he last saw a patient, he informed me that he no longer accepted appointments.
In that moment, as Hugh leaned in and asked what was troubling me, I realized I had slipped back into seeing him as my therapist. Just in that instant, he helped me unravel a lifelong issue – my need for approval. If finally hit me - I couldn’t get the approval I wanted even if I tried!
I came to understand that I no longer needed to seek approval, as it was never mine to receive or question. The only approval I needed was not from Hugh, nor from my family, not from any other person, not even from myself – but only from God!
The approval I had sought my entire life was unconditional love. This realization brought deep gratitude, as I understood this approval was not something I deserved and yet could never lose. It is Gods love that I desired, which is perfect, and casts out all fear.
My journey to freedom lay in my divine appointment with God. Little did I realize, God would use Hugh that day to free me from a personalized trap I had set for myself, denying my own access to the approval of God who had already approved of me and had already given to me!
If you are like me – and trust me, it was impossible to convince me to attend therapy – you likely need some form of self-care or self-help. I thoroughly recommend exploring the link to Psychology Today that I shared last week.
Please pray, discern, and seek the help, answers, and access to the approval that has been given to us all. This approval has been freely given as a gift, without consequence, and leads to eternity with Jesus.
It is my prayer you experience Him and his approval too. Jesus is real today, with you and in the approval business! It is now just up to you now, like me, to be able yes and to truly be able to freely accept Gods love! Hallelujah! In Jesus name. Amen.
