Free & Fit - The Expectation of Pre-Season

By Tim Cheux - the Free & Fit Challenge

We wait a long time for Pre-Season to come. We travel through the summer holidays, the chaos of the Club World Cup, and the various tennis, golf, and racing car distractions that try to pull us away from the one thing that really matters — our team’s transfer window. How dare the sporting world distract us with other events while we await the latest move from our club’s football director or managing director, poised to purchase our next star striker or world-class, ball-playing goalkeeper?

Whether you support a Football League club, Premier League side, or even an MLS team, we’re all ready for football to return to our screens this autumnal season.

The preparation isn’t just about the ten-day American, European, or Australasian world tour for our teams. It’s an experience — a whole season of anticipation — for the many thousands of fans who don’t get to live the week-in, week-out energy of good old English Football League action. The Saturday and Tuesday nights of the Championship. The Sunday afternoons and Thursday night Europa League qualifiers of the Scottish Premiership. The chaotic Champions League fixture schedule, and the Premier League’s response to yet another game, another cup competition, another 90 minutes that just might cause an ACL injury to your star striker or your latest marquee signing.

This Saturday, we’ll all be revealing our fantasy teams, building our Saturday evenings around watching Gary Lineker’s successor, and finally returning to some form of normality — because footy is back on the telly again.

It’s kind of wild to think that we act like our lives pause just because 22 men haven’t been kicking a ball around for us on a Saturday afternoon. It’s nostalgic, it’s familiar, and — if we’re honest — it’s a little sad. Sad that we don’t have more going on in our lives, that we only feel like things are “back to normal” once we’ve thrown a pillow at the TV and kicked the dog’s water bowl over in frustration after another disappointing defeat.

Really, we should know better.

We have the hope for all humanity in Jesus Christ — who has run the race before us, won the victor’s crown, and built an abundance of wellness ahead of us to step into this season.

We also pray that you will be strengthened with all His glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father.”Colossians 1:11-12, NLT

So, this season, let’s not build our Saturday evenings solely around the expectation of FA Premier League quality. Instead, let’s place our trust in the truth that we are beloved by our Lord and Saviour. Let’s be so captivated by our Creator’s love that our Sunday mornings won’t be a hangover — they’ll be a highlight. Our Saturday nights will be early ones, not because we’re boring, but because we want to be well-rested for what we are about to receive at our local church.

“He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to His people, who live in the light. For He has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of His dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.”— Colossians 1:13-14, NLT

The statistics are real. Those who celebrate life together, who have faith and believe, and who make a habit of meeting regularly are genuinely more likely to live longer and prosper. So instead of chasing after worldly success, let’s experience the greatest victory of all — life in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Hallelujah!

Let us Pray together…

Father God, be with us for the season ahead. Help us become little so You can become great. Help us to be receptive to who You are, to what You have done, and to what You will do in our lives — even as we celebrate that long-awaited moment when our team finally lifts the trophy. Help us, Lord, to lift up our eyes, our energy, and our eternity toward You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
