To Infinity & Beyond! By Rev TJ Cheux
When Pete Docter first imagined the concept of Buzz Lightyear and captioned his favorite catchphrase, “To Infinity and Beyond!”, he must not have been aware of how successful his work would be. Personally, I felt for sure this movie—an animated film (one of the first ever CGI movies) and cartoon fad, would surely just pass away. Yet, here we are: somewhat four movies, a 2022 Lightyear spin-off, and a pending 2026 Toy Story Five, thirty years later, still marveling at Buzz.
It’s true, that 1995 movie is now twenty years strong and still going very well into infinity and far beyond whatever I, or surely Pete, ever imagined. Perhaps it will go all the way to Toy Story Infinity! The main character, the main catchphrase, and the main theme still ring true today: that people want to play, people want to have fun, and, for sure, fun and play appeal to all age groups. Even I still want to play and have fun!
Have you ever imagined who would play your cartoon character? Who would be the voice of your cartoon character concept? What would their catchphrase be? How would you like them to be remembered? As we look towards Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the soon-to-be Christmas Holidays, we surely want to get our movie out in the cinemas before the Big Holidays!
We must not forget that not only is Jesus the Reason for the Season, but that our world is desperately seeking more justice, peace, and happiness than ever before. The fun, play, and enjoyment of Buzz Lightyear may not save the world, but Jesus can and will make a way for us all back to Himself. This fall season, as we prepare for the Holidays, let’s be ready to share the reason for the hope that we have for all humanity in Jesus Christ!
