US Open Trophy: Our founder with the US Open Trophy for Men’s Singles
One of the most difficult parts of playing competitive sports is overcoming your biggest failures. This summer, Amanda Anisimova became the first ladies' tennis player to lose 6-0, 6-0 in a major final in over 114 years. Not only that, this defeat came after previously falling out of the top 400 rankings and taking 10 months off for mental health reasons in spring 2023.

Victorious: Amanda celebrates her victory

This is a lot for a 23-year-old player, but she made it the hard way, overcoming her own obstacles. This Saturday, accolades return for Amanda as she faces off in her second major tennis final of the year at the US Open against world number one, Ayana Sabalenka.
First, she had to beat her previous opponent, Iga Swiatek, from that infamous final defeat at Wimbledon this July. After that painful defeat, Amanda demonstrated great grit and determination, watching the painful memory of her defeat and applying herself to overcome challenges and come out victorious.

Thankful: Amanda is an overcomer today!

A quarter-final 6-4, 6-3 victory was followed by another triumphant semi-final victory over former world number one Naomi Osaka 6-7, 7-6, 6-3. The statistics do not give any indication as to what the defeated finalist has overcome. The mental strength, the physical challenge, and constant pressure have made it all worth it after such a difficult outcome.
This Saturday, Amanda Anisimova has the opportunity to complete the transition from failed finalist to Open champion, but that won’t be her biggest victory. The decision to get back up, to play, and to approach the world again without fear of failure enormously demonstrates her positive character and example to so many other people who play sports or are just navigating their way through life.
When you face trials or tribulations, it’s hard to know how you will feel on the other side. Instead of just talking about other people’s performances or our favorite players’ stories dominating our thinking, we must fix our eyes on finishing, winning, and becoming victorious through our own divine inspiration in Jesus Christ. It’s imperative that we fix our energy, attention, and eyes on Christ so that we know that our performance, our obstacle, and our outcome won’t be the determining factor in our motivation.
For who has known the mind and purposes of the Lord, so as to instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ [to be guided by His thoughts and purposes]. [Is 40:13]”
